How Was The Hole In The Ozone Layer Formed

Ozone is repeatedly created and destroyed in the atmosphere by the UV rays coming from the sun. Certain human-made substances had reached the stratosphere and disrupted the ozone layer to the point of depletion creating an extremely thin section commonly known as the ozone hole.

An unexpectedly large hole in the ozone layer formed over the Arctic because of an unusually cold winter and an extreme polar vortex.

How was the hole in the ozone layer formed. It has become general knowledge that chemicals called CFCs chloroflourocarbons are responsible for the hole in the ozone layer - in fact scientists estimate 80 of CFCs in the stratosphere are derived from humans not nature. The emission of gases that rise up to the stratosphere degrade the ozone molecules thereby increasing the size and effect of this hole in the ozone layer. A typical Dobson reading for the ozone layer is about 300 Dobson units meaning that the ozone layer would only be about 3mm thick if brought down to sea-level.

It forms about 10-30 miles above the Earths surface and forms a protective layer called the ozone layer that shields us from too much of the suns harmful ultraviolet radiation UV. One Dobson unit can be thought of as the amount of ozone that would be present if it formed a layer 001mm thick at average sea-level pressure and temperature. The ozone layer is a thin part of the Earths atmosphere that absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation from the Sun.

Many people have heard that the ozone hole is caused by chemicals called CFCs short for chlorofluorocarbons. Image caption The ozone hole over Antarctica in the year 2000. For instance carbon dioxide and global warming might cause the stratosphere to cool which could further deplete the ozone layer source.

The European Space Agency backed Copernicus. Most of which is formed where solar radiation is the greatest the equatorial belt. Ozone can also be generated artificially using a machine called ozone generator.

Ozone harms human health and the environment when it forms close to the ground. In one sense the ozone hole can be understood as a thin area of the layer because if we collected all the ozone in that vertical area it would be thinner than other places over the earth. This series of satellite images shows the ozone hole on the day of its maximum depth each year from 1979 through 2019.

This is mostly because of a strong wind band that flows around the Antarctic area. However the ozone layer is continuously depleting forming a hole in the layer. In the lower atmosphere they are so stable that they persist for years even decades.

Ground-level ozone is bad ozone. The scientists explained that the hole in the ozone layer is formed as chlorine and bromine-containing substances accumulate within the freezing polar vortex where they remain inactive in darkness. The Ozone Hole It is now established that the ozone layer covers the Earth and acts as a shield against ultraviolet radiation from the Sun.

In the early 1980s scientists began to realize that CFCs were creating a thin spota holein the ozone layer over Antarctica every spring. The ozone hole is the break in the protective layer of one that is found in the stratosphere of the planet. A hole has opened in the ozone layer over the Arctic due to a polar vortex causing unusually freezing temperatures in parts of the atmosphere.

The hole formed at the South Pole due to the regions unique meteorological and chemical conditions. In addition ozone gas in the troposphere below the ozone layer and chlorofluorocarbons CFCs which have helped cause the ozone hole are greenhouse gases which means they trap heat in the earths atmosphere. A New Hole Is Forming in the Ozone Layer Over the Arctic.

The main cause of ozone depletion and the ozone hole is manufactured chemicals especially manufactured halocarbon refrigerants solvents propellants and foam- blowing agents chlorofluorocarbons CFCs HCFCs halons referred to as ozone-depleting substances ODS. This layer traps greenhouse gasses and protects the surface of the earth from direct UV. CFCs escape into the atmosphere from refrigeration and propellant devices and processes.

The hole in our ozone layer is constantly changing growing bigger and smaller in size. It is like an invisible but well-built shell. Ozone is naturally created when UV radiation hits oxygen gas molecules O 2 and breaks some of them apart into single oxygen atoms.

In this article we discuss the ozone layer the formation. The amount of stratospheric ozone varies in every location due to latitude and seasons. Stratospheric ozone is good ozone.

The reason why Hole in Ozone Layer is Damaging Despite the hole in the ozone layer is due to the natural fluctuations of ozone in the atmosphere it is also caused by human activities. However ozone and CFCs contribute very little to climate change compared to carbon dioxide. These molecules provide a protective layer around the earth absorbing a large portion of the suns radiation particularly some of the harmful ultraviolet UV rays that cause sunburn.

Specifically scientists are worried that production of CFCs will lead to a hole over Antarctica.
